Have you ever experienced a stage in your life when you really wanted something new with your look? Yup. That’s was me. Ever since I came back from my recent trip to Cape Town (Read it here), I’ve been anticipating to change up my look and do something different with my hair. I’ve always had long black hair and was never one for taking risks when I was growing up. But the first time I did something to my hair was 2 years ago, I when for the cut and permed it as well. Since then, time has passed and I just haven’t bothered to do anything exciting to my hair. However, this time I wanted something slightly different to what I’ve already done before… If you’re interested in how I changed my look, continue reading to find out!

I Changed My LookWith the fall season finally rolling in Hong Kong, I thought now would be a great time play around with my hair in preparation for the festive season! I’ve always wanted to change up my look, but I didn’t exactly know for sure what it was I wanted (very indecisive as you can read here). I knew I wanted a look that was different, yet natural looking and easy to style. Coincidentally, I caught up with a friend of mine and when I saw her hair colour, it was everything I wanted! I immediately asked who her stylist was and I was referred to Benjiman Amey, a freelance stylist here in Hong Kong.

I Changed My LookBenjiman Amey is an incredibly talented hair colourist and stylist. As soon as I told him about the look I was going for, he instantly understood the vision and went straight to work. The whole process took 3 hours to do and I was surprised how quick it actually was! Not only was the process seamless, it was very enjoyable getting my hair done by the expert and chatting with him. For someone who has no idea about hair, I knew Benjiman was the perfect person to gain some insight and tips on all things hair. He was very knowledgeable about his craft so I wanted to know more about how I could take care of my hair better. Here are a couple of questions I asked from our chat:Where do you find inspiration for new hair styles/ looks?B: It really depends on the client and the lifestyle, since it’s not aWhat is your go to hair product?B: Moroccan Oil, I use it every day and it always keeps your hair protected and moisturised and even shiny all day long. What is the mostly popular request for hair colouring or styles in Hong Kong?B: Definitely balayage. A lot of clients know the term but don’t understand what it is. There are different types of balayage, be it lighter, darker, contoured around the face or all over. But this is also a stylist’s job to educate the client on what it is.

So what is a Balayage?B: Balayage is a French technique of painting lightness around the hair, giving the hair a very natural sun-kissed glow look and colour. Is Balayage more harder to do on Asian hair?B: Yes it usually is, since Asian hair is usually thicker, coarser and darker. But I love doing Asian hair as its always a good challenge. To make the balayage look natural on darker hair, it is essential to add a lighter base beforehand to lift the darker colour beneath and adding more balayage. But I love the challenge! What product would you recommend to keep the colour in my hair?B: Fanola No Yellow Shampoo, this is a great product to use for colour hair that isn’t drying but has strong purple pigments that help contain the colour in your hair. Moroccan hair mask is also a great product to keeo your hair moist and healthy. If you’re looking for a great hair colourist in Hong Kong, I would definitely recommend going to Benjiman Amey. Make sure to contact him beforehand to have a consultation and check out his amazing work here!
