My Basket Bag Obsession
If you have been following me on Instagram for a while, you would have realized that I’ve been going to a lot of seaside destinations lately. If you know me well, tropical and summer getaways are (hands down) my favourite kind of holiday, this also allows me to wear summer and resort attire (which is also my fav). You may also have noticed that I’ve been bringing a couple of basket bags along with me during these trips. So this time, I’ve dedicated my whole post on my basket bag obsession. Keep reading to see why I’ve been so obsession and why you should be too!How this all started really came from these small basket bag purses that kept that popping up on my instagram feed 2 years ago… although it seemed a little odd at the time, a few travel and fashion girls I followed on Instagram started wearing and styling them in very interesting ways. It immediately caught my attention, as they weren’t just wearing them in holiday resort settings, they were wearing them out in the city on a daily basis! I loved how such a simple and raw materials could be use to create bags of different shapes and sizes while styling it with a very stylish approach!
So as I did a bit more research, I realized that it wasn’t really a new trend. The basket was signature style that was worn by actress and style icon Jane Birkin all through out the 70’s. Birkin was photographed famously hanging it on her arm everywhere she went, from an afternoon at the beach to black tie events at Cannes Film Festivals. It was almost impossible to see her being separated from her trusty petite basket bag. But it wasn’t until she met the chief executive of Hermes, who initiated the design of a new bag named after her (The Birkin Bag), that she stop wearing the basket bag. This timeless piece might just be the perfect summer accessory every girl needs in her closet. I love how every piece needs to be done by hand with a very high level of craftsmanship. The woven material of a basket bag allows it to be light and airy, as well as charmingly functional and easy to match with just any outfit. I love pairing this accessory with a dress shirt and A-line skirt for an office day or a bright sundress for the beach and resort.
Since this micro-trend started picking up mid last year, this items is easily accessible to shop from your high-end designer shops to vintage finds in markets such as Ubud market in Bali (that’s where I got two of my mini basket bags!).
